Yesterday, it was celebrated Safe Internet Day. Sincerely, only the name seems a paradox. We live in an age where we are all online, but few feel safe, even in the virtual world, where we often witness real battles of opinion, criticism and offenses that can cause serious mental health problems , related to self-esteem, exclusion and depression, especially in the younger age groups.

Queen Mathilde of Belgium released a message on Cyber-Bullying for the first time in a video recorded at her official residence in Laken Castle. In this video, released in French and Dutch, the Belgian Queen appealed to common sense and respect when publishing content online, targeting young people:

"Social media are very nice and very practical for communicating with friends or expressing our opinion, but we know that we can not use them anyway. If you are about to post something online, make sure you are using common sense and you are respecting others. Do not allow online violence to harm someone's life. I call on everyone to say "No" to cyberbullying Show solidarity with all young people who are victims of violence online and who have the courage to talk about it. If someone posts something about you online, that make you feel worried, angry or sad, speak up! Do not keep these feelings to yourself. Talk to your parents, to your friends or to other people in whom  you trust. There is always a way to find someone who is willing to listen to you and help you. And if you know that there are other people who are victims of violence online, offer them your understanding. It is in your hands, together, to face cyberbullying. Do not hesitate to tell the offender that their attitude is inappropriate. In doing so you are being "cool", not them. Because online violence is not worth anything. "

Mother of four teenage children, Mathilde is naturally a woman concerned about the time our young people spend online and the difficulty many parents have in properly following a generation accustomed to speed and easy access, and who may, if not alerted to this, letting itself be influenced negatively by the thousands of contents, comments and opinions that are shared daily online. Along with her patronage, Child Focus, the Belgian Queen has closely followed children and young people who have been bullied, using her Psychology skills.

"As you know, I am a psychologist. This was my profession. I have seen children bearing the consequences of other people's misbehavior. I have always cared about people's mental well-being-this is also the essence of my work as an Advocate for the United Nations Global Goals for  a Sustainable Development, to ensure that people have access to good mental health care and a good education, which is why I am here. I want to give these people a voice. And I will continue doing this, as long as this kind of bullying goes on. "
Being online is great. Using the virtual world to hurt other people is unacceptable.
As in most things in life, everything goes through education. To know how to be in this virtual world, one must know how to be in the real world. We have to educate our children and young people to be the same people behind and in front of the screen / tablet / smartphone. And we have to be the adults to lead by example.
The contact can be virtual. The feelings, aren't!
