Membros da família real britânica no 100º aniversário da Batalha de Somme / Members of the British Royal Family at the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Somme

Hardly another royal family honor its armed forces, current and past away, such as the British Royal Family. That's what happened yesterday during the tribute to the casualties of the Battle of the Somme which took place from 1 July to 18 November 1916.

Yesterday the Queen accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh attended a religious service in tribute to this centenary at Westminster Abbey in London.
The Queen laid a wreath on the grave of the Unknown Soldier during the ceremony. This grave contains the remains of an unidentified soldier killed in combat in Europe. His presence in the Abbey pays tribute to all undentified soldiers killed in combat.

After the ceremony, followed a vigil during the night, which was attended by several professionals in the military, which lasted until 7:30 am the morning of Friday, when precisely 100 years before the Allied troops advanced into Somme.

Meanwhile in France, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry took part in the tribute to those who fell in this battle at the Thiepval Memorial where the more than 70,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers with unknown grave, are celebrated.

The trio watched from the top of the memorial the scenario which was a bloody battlefield 100 years ago in the north of France and received information about the events that took place on July 1, 1916.

The Thiepval Memorial was built between 1928 and 1932 and opened in August 1932.

William, Catherine and Harry attended a religious service and a twilight vigil at the Memorial which is also a symbol of the alliance between the British and French armies during the 1916's offensive against the German Empire.

Next to the Memorial, there is a small cemetery that contains exactly the same number of French and Commonwealth graves.

Readings were made by the Duke of Cambridge who said that, in the words of Sebastian Faulkes, "We lost the flower of a generation."

Prince Harry read W N Hodgson's Before Action, written just days before he died on 1 July 1916. "Tonight we think of them as they nerved themselves for what lay ahead."

Very impressive images from yesterday's vigil in France. Silent, heavy, even emotional.

At a time when Europe's future is uncertain and that many "nerved themselves for what lay ahead" I can not fail to appeal to people to start once and for all to learn from History, and look at it not as Past but as something to be kept in mind at the Present, if we want to have a better Future.

The Battle of the Somme was the bloodiest conflict of the history of the British Armed Forces. It took place between 1 July and 18 November on both sides of the  River Somme in France.

It was the greatest battle of World War I on the western front, where more than a million men were wounded or killed, making it one of the most brutal battles in human history, where for the first time the war tank was used.

Only in the first day of battle the British Army suffered 60,000 casualties, of which 20,000 resulted in death.

And if it was today?
