During the last few days since the announcement of the abdication of King Juan Carlos I of Spain, I have been confronted with messages of (some alarmed) readers and fans of royalty to question me if the monarchy in Spain is in danger.

I confess that I had (and still have) a sense of fear about the demonstrations that followed Juan Carlos's decision. However, as with everything in life, there is nothing as to gather information from various quarters, and take a look at the bigger picture.

Spain is a  separatist country in nature. A separatist country facing a financial crisis that is affecting the whole of Europe a few years by now. A Latin country, with a boiling temper, unhappy and looking for a reason to pick on the royal family who in recent years has been widely criticized. A country disillusioned with their King who united Spain but that seems to have lost his mind in recent years. Some say that in Spain there is no royalists, but "Juan Carlistas". Spain has been in the last two centuries a dancer between monarchy and dictatorship, and it naturally discontent a people already displeased that seems to be a puppet in the middle of these political decisions.

However, a regime change at this time in Spain, it seems to me that would have disastrous consequences. Incidentally as a member of the European Union, I think that such a thing would not even be as easy and as sensationalist as the media tries to make us believe. Each country is independent within the Eurozone, but everyone played by the same score. And such a decision would affect not only Spain, and Europe does not want to take that risk.

The proof of this are the numbers: 150 000 people were expected on the streets of Madrid to republican demonstrations. Appeared only 30,000. A failure for the Republicans. The two major parties in the Spanish congress already have expressed their support for the monarchy and the way everything has been planned to detail minimizes the risk of damage to the monarchy. Consider this:

January: Around his birthday on January 5, King Juan Carlos decides that is time to abdicate. He communicates his decision to Crown Prince Felipe and Queen Sofia. A few days later, he informs the Royal Household Chief.

Janeiro/Fevereiro: A Infanta Elena é informada. As irmãs do Rei são informadas.
Late January/Early February: Infanta Elena is informed. Also the King sisters know about it.
Março: O Rei informa o Primeiro-Ministro.
March: King Juan Carlos informs the Prime Minister.
April: King Juan Carlos informs the opposition leader. The King decides that he’ll make the abdication public in June, after the elections. The government started to prepare the laws that will allow the abdication.
May 28: In a meeting with the Prime Minister and the opposition leader, King Juan Carlos informs that the abdication will be made public next Monday.
June 2: The abdication is made public by the Prime Minister. King Juan Carlos talks to the country.

A thoughtful thing that resulted in the formulation of a law of Abdication which was approved yesterday by the government cabinet meeting. The law has already been forwarded to Congress for a vote, which is expected to be approved with about 91% of the votes.

11 June: The law will be voted in the congress.
17 de Junho: A Lei será votada no Senado.
17 June: The law will be voted in the Senate

The law can be found here, it  was proved quite surprising. Not for the implications , but perhaps for the clever way the issue was planned . The law provides that at the time when Felipe becomes King , the other members of the royal family , King Juan Carlos , Queen Sofia and Infantas Elena and Cristina will lose political immunity with which they had been privileged over the past 39 years. More : all members will no longer receive funding from the Crown, and they can only rely on their personal fortunes . Infanta Elena and Infanta Cristina and their families will no longer be part of the Spanish royal family and no longer will attend to official  unfamiliar acts. They will only be considered members of the family of the King and not from the royal family. This situation is not new . The current King's sisters also lost their royal status at the time Juan Carlos ascended the throne . What marks the difference here is that this way the judicial way to determine Infanta Cristina's involvement in the Noos case Noos is thus open. The criticized King Juan Carlos may have planned here a form of her daughter and son in law would be rightly investigated without it damaging the image of the other members of the royal family. A decision that was taken into consideration during the past few years , but that does not appear easy to take, as clear.

18 June: King Felipe VI will be proclaimed in a join session of the Cortes Generales in the Congress.

We do not expect a fancy ceremony, much less now. Only the closest family and perhaps a few representatives of some royal houses. In my opinion it will be very difficult to Infanta Cristina be present, but let's wait and see.

When the Crown Prince, Felipe de Borbón, is proclaimed King in the Cortes Generales, Princess Letizia will raise to Queen Consorte and, as established by the Constitution, Infanta Leonor, their eldest daughter, becomes the heir of the throne of Spain (the youngest royal heir in Europe) and the XXXVI Princess of Asturias. When Infanta Leonor reach adulthood, she will take a loyalty oath to the King and to the Spanish Constitution at the Congress.

Times of Change in Spain. A strong change of the Spanish Crown's own website that is being completely revamped.

But times are changing across Europe and in my own head . This wave of waivers in European monarchies and the Vatican in the space of a year , has made me question my own ideals . For me this was often the oath "to country until the last breath " that marked the difference between a monarchy and a republic . Today I see that everyone without exception must serve our country until our last breath . Before I was categorically against abdications (except for certain reasons).
Today I believe that in monarchies this can become clearly a trend, because the reign has to be renewed , there have to be new faces, which began their work increasingly prominently as "helpers" of the Monarch  as they will inherit the throne increasingly later . Before I was afraid that the modernization of monarchical ideals, such as the occurrence of  abdications , could damage or banalize the image of the monarchical institution. Today I see that the media and people in general focus more on the life and skills of the heirs that in the Heads of State , and what was previous seen as a bad and shameful decision, as an abdication , today it can be (and already have been in other times ) the salvation of an Ideal and continuation of a renewed institution , idealistic and eager to work with fresh blood.

I do not know about tomorrow. Nobody knows. There were times I doubted that Felipe will become King. The damage and scandals were too many. The stubbornness (or persistence) of a King accustomed to be loved was very big. But his intelligence in this final stretch was delayed but it was also great. Looking for other European cases please, let's not compar. Queen Elizabeth II will NEVER abdicate (and I can't see any reason for it), Sweden, Denmark and Luxembourg still have a long way to go for the energy monarchs who rule these countries. In Norway this could happen very soon, in my opinion.

When the new generation of Kings and Queens take power, oh yes, things will change. The Royal Abdication can become a peaceful manner, without a trace of frustration or failure, to make a smooth transition between heads of state, with the advantage of the new sovereign could still count on the experience and advice from their predecessors.

Dear readers, the Abdication can become a great ally of the monarchy. And in some cases, as in Spain, her best friend!

My wish is that Felipe and Letizia remain what they have been until now: a great team who, with professionalism, competence and union, have represented Spain border in the best way they know. Letizia will have a long way to go, because she never met consensus, but I am certain that the Spaniards and the world will end up being surrendered to the jurisdiction of this perfectionist  middle class former journalist, that on the 18 will be proclaimed Queen of Spain!
